Gosh Darn it, Bull Spit

Lent has begun.  It is a time for sacrifice.  Good Catholics (and even not so good Catholics like me) give "something" up for the 40 days between Lent and Easter Sunday, as a sort of gift for Jesus.  It's a time for reflection and preparation for Easter Sunday.  It's always hard for me to decide just what to give up.  It should be something that I'll feel/miss, yet on the other hand it can't be too hard, because I don't want to succumb to temptation.  A little self-denial is never a bad thing.

Many people will use this time for self improvement; perhaps motivation for weightloss, but I do not.  I firmly believe that whatever sacrifice you choose for Lent, you should gain no benefit (i.e. weight loss) from it.  The point of self denial is to have a little empathy for Jesus, who suffered for our sins, not personal gain.

Soooooooooooooo, I am giving up swearing, both in writing (on this blog) and in person. Truth be told, I really do not swear much in person. Sugar Bear has heard me swear so few times, that when I do, he knows he's in serious trouble. But here? Depending on the day, half the words on this blog are of the 4 lettered variety so this will be tough.  Not quite as tough as something like giving up poker for 40 days, but difficult indeed.
The best part of Lent is every Sunday you get a reprieve.  Sundays are free days, so you can indulge in whatever you've given up on Sundays.  Love that!  When I was growing up it was like a little party every Sunday.  I usually gave up Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum so come Sunday, you'd find me chomping all day long.

Okay, let's see if I can discuss last night's horrible play without typing the work fark. :)

For some reason I decided to play a large tourney.  $24+2 with about 1,200 peeps.  I chipped up early, as is my wont, and was well ahead of average with about 8K when I got AA. I min raised in early position and someone with about the same stack size reraised me.  I LOVE that.  There was about 900 in the pot.  I decided to shove all in instead of calling.  As soon as I did it I thought there was no way he could call off his whole stack to me who had about the same, but I was wrong!  He joined me, 8K all in and I was up against 9,9.  Two outer!

Mama's aces held up!  Now that I had chips....heck, I was the chip leader, I used my stack to leverage more.

Not too shabbay, right?  I was up to over 18k but I was out of the tourney within the hour.  I threw the whole gosh darn thing away.  I am upset with myself and that's putting it mildly.

I lost half my stack with trip jacks.  I bet hard, one person called and the next jammed all in.  There were 2 hearts on the board.  Do I fold there?  I didn't.  I called and the dude called behind me.  3 way all in.  Are there 5 jacks in this deck?  No! Neither one had a J.  One had a flush draw and the other pocket 4s, which turned into a full house.  Ugh.  Half my stack gone.  A few hands later I get 10-10 and raise big.  Person in first position jams all in.  Would you fold?????? I KNOW I should've folded but I did not.  I called and I was in a race against A-K.  I came in 2nd in that race.  I should've known at best I'm racing and at worst I'm behind.  I know the sting of losing with the jacks made me tilty enough to make that call.  Then I was short stacked, jammed with middle pair and gg Josie......or I should probably say bg Josie.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.  I always chip up early.  Always.  Then I usually donk off the chips.  Then I see the error of my ways.  Then repeat.

It aggravates the heck out of me.

Play smart, unlike Very Josie.

Never in all my life did I hear of the "Sunday reprieve." Giving up something for 40 days that is important to you or a big habit is ofttimes difficult. But getting a freebie once a week?

Any other Catholic or former Catholic bloggers -- did you ever hear of the "freebie Sunday?"
Josie said…
I dunno - that's the way we did it in our house.

Here's what I found on Wikipedia:

Most followers of Western Christianity observe Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding on Holy Saturday.[2][5] The six Sundays in this period are not counted because each one represents a "mini-Easter," a celebration of Jesus' victory over sin and death.

Congratulations for not working blue for Lent. BTW, FARK is out from this point on unless you are a Farkle and they have red hair. If you are claiming to be a Farkle, we'll all know you're covering up that with tint.

You may use pshaw and drat in moderation.

Actually it's 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter, not counting Sundays. Maybe that has something to do with the "Sunday Fundays?"

I like pshaw!!!

Lucki Duck, you smart guy! Thanks for the info.

Wow -- the first two people I talked to said "Yeah -- you get Sundays off." I am totally shocked. It's like finding out that this person you thought was was woman is really ... nevermind ...

I trust that Lucki has gone to the source of the issue. Since Sundays are technically not part of Lent ...

I am really surprised to have had this shoot by me all these years. You'd think that growing up in a middle class middle-of-the-road Catholic environment I would have been part of the "Sunday freebie."

Now -- is it retroactive? Like if I have given up stuff for Lent for different years and included Sundays in Lent, does that mean that I am owed all the Sundays worth of stuff I gave up every year?

Yeah -- nothing like a little light-hearted jabbering about religious practices. lol

Lightning, do I have to prove to you that I'm a woman? Is that where you're going with this?

And I taught the holy one something about Lent. Yay me.

This just in via email from my FAVORITE Irishman:

Baby,
In Ireland the supreme Island of Catholics the only reprieve during lent was St. Patricks Day so all the adults could get drunk & the kids were speeding on chocolate!

Jews life a life of self-inflicted denial and we personally were kind of poor so doing without stuff was more or less the status quo ("35 cents for a pack of gum?? Hubba Bubba, SHMUBBA BUBBA!")

(Yes, Very Josie and I are just a few years apart, and we both remember when Hubba Bubba first came out - it was the first gum that came in blocks instead of sticks and my God, were they sweet.)

Anyway, you Catholics...wacky stuff...
Josie said…
Yes, Hubba Bubba and Bubble Yum were big stuff when I was a kid. Also Fresh Up, the gum that squirts in your mouth, which is really kinda gross when you think about it.

Oh and thanks fore reminding me that I am 2 years older than a 42 year old Jewish guy with a long ponytail and plenty of white in his beard.

Spearing my schlong if I converted to your religion is on the wacky side, wouldn't you agree? : o P

Well, if I dyed MY hair I wouldn't be grey either. And poopskie, the older I get, just remember, the even older you get.

Before you respond, remember it's Lent!

(I could grow to like this)

Oooo I love it when the chat turns to schlongs. :) Luckily schlong is not a swear.

@lightning, spearing it? I think your concept of what circumcision is, leaves a little to be desired.

It's like a haircut: A little off the top, for god's sake.

I don't care who you are, that was funny.
Josie said…
Yeah, but you'd look like one of those weird old men who dye their hair. NOT a look to shoot for.

Nothing worse than a man with dyed hair, except a man with a toupee.
crafty said…
This is true, actually. In men, oftentimes, grey hair that gets dyed turns an unearthly purple. Not a good look.

Was there JJ4 flop when you lost with trip jacks?

More important question of course is did you overplay AJ, KJ or JT???
Josie said…
No the miserable 4 came later on.

What I failed to mention is that I overplayed AJ like 3 times yesterday. AJ vs AA lost. AJ vs A4 lost...and I forget the other one. None of these were a factor in that tourney I mucked up though.

This is one of the funnier and entertaining collection of comments....
Josie..next time you get a big chiplead like that walk away for an hour and then come back to play. Forget about playing A-J.....
Josie said…
I was thinking the same thing. If I walked away for a while, I could've mebbe skidded itm with that stack. Of course I wasnt looking for itm. i was more interested in final table $$.

Oh, I didn't know about the Sunday rule... Maybe Sundays during Lent go in the "no birth control" category?
Josie said…
Linda, I think the no birth control category is part of the russian roulette theory.

Light I never heard of it either until I was in college and I grew up near Josie. I think she just came from one of those reformed Catholic congregations. They probably eat meat on Fridays in Lent too.

Oh sure, now that you and light have bonded you take his side. Grrrr lol

Josie, haven't you noticed that all the guys who end up on the opposite side of the fence from you are always the most handsome, intelligent, talented, generous, and humble bloggers out there?

As a matter of fact Lightning, I have noticed that, except for the humble part.
