Very Josie

It's going to be a busy day for our Super Hero! It's my "vacation day" but I'm heading into work.  The plan is to work until 11:30am and then go straight from there to a live tourney that starts at 1:00pm. Yes, I'm working on my day off again, but there's a reason for it.  I left work early yesterday to visit family.  A bunch of my aunts and uncles (all old and retired) were visiting my mom, so I decided to make a guest appearance.  Boy did that make their day.  They hadn't had any Very Josie love for quite a while. Good thing I don't mind hugging them .  Got quite a bit of hugging, kissing and cheek pinching.  Believe it or not, at 43, I'm one of the youngest nieces/nephews they've got (ahem, Cricket's the oldest).  Auntie Louise says to me, "So Honey, I can't believe you're 44." One of my all time favorite bloggers is Hurricane Mikey.  He rocks.  He has a huge following, and I ought to know, because I've been following him for years.  Anyway, he's the one who got me started in the blogging department.  Yes Wolfie, blame Mikey. I read his blog religiously and one day I offered him an "incentive" to write an epic post.  And I mean epic.  It was a story of him travelling with a giant canoe to Alaska, lol.  There's more to it than that, but that's not what this post's about. After that we got to chatting a bit and he graciously offered to let me be a guest blogger on his site and tell a poker story of mine.  Well, if you know me even a little, you know I was thrilled.....after a couple of months another blogger, Linda Lou asked her readers to think about what they really wanted to do and do it. Damn, I really liked writing about poker, and although I thought not a soul would read my stuff, I decided to make a real effort...

When I was little, growing up in a large Italian family, you hugged and kissed everyone.  Aunts, uncles, even people you didn't know well, as a show of respect.  That's the way it was in my family. Today everyone seems to hug but these days it's awkward for me.  At my weekly game it's how I greet and send off the fishies.  But like I said, it's awkward.  There's Noodles....hug him and you might get humped.  But dammit, he won't allow me to not hug him. I think it's the highlight of his week and I hate to disappoint. Then there's Youth, the guy that usually tags along behind him.  He's a young, good looking thing, but I don't know him very well, so why should I hug him?  I guess it's because I hug the other guys, so it seems weird to leave one out.  Then there's The Mayor.  He turns a bright shade of crimson just talking to me, so hugging is waaay awkward.  But not hugging is too! And do I really need to hug guys ...

Out of the invitational in 20 minutes!!!  Stupid bluff with 3 clubs on the board.  And Snail Trax, the guy in the hand, had the flush.  Not good.  Dunno why I even did that.  Had plenty o chips and everything.  Duh.  And guess who was at my table?  Waffles himself!  He and I had a little incentive bet going on....obviously it didn't help me. We'll see if adds enough motivation to make Waffles win.  Right now he has 3,700. I'll update periodically while I play an MTT. About 1 1/2 hrs into it and Waffles has about 10K.  He made an all in call with a flush draw and caught his flush on the river......Ace rag beats AA (Coop can feel the pain, can't you Coop?).  Why is it I always lose with ace rag, but Waffles?  He cracks aces with it. Happy Mother's Day to me!  Wanna see my babies? Axl Rose I had Axl since he was about 2 weeks old.  He was abandoned in a barn and Mama saved him. That was in 1990. He grew into a big mean outdoor cat that everyone gave a wide berth to. (except me)  He mellowed as be became a nitty old man, and actually looked forward to poker night (I think) cuz he'd get extra ear scratching from Gary. Axl will always hold a special place in my heart.  He wouldn't let a soul pat him, but me?  I'd dress him up for holidays and pose him for Christmas cards.  He lived to 20 years old.  I made the difficult decision to put him to sleep about 2 months ago. He'd been very sick for about a year but I  just couldn't bring myself to do it.  Finally, I couldn't NOT do it.  Sweet Axl Rose, named after one of my favorite singers (AT THE TIME).  Man that game sucked after the 3rd inning.  It started out so well too, with Beckett striking out the side in the first inning.  Frigging Francona just leaves him on the hill until the Yanks score 7 runs.... then he takes him out after the damage is done. Other than the actual game, we had a great time.  The client sat with the owner and I sat next to the boss.  Seemed the boss knew every person in the section so it was a party atmosphere. Good morning All! Somebody (me) has the day off.  Yep I have the day off and tonight I'm going to a Red Sox vs. Yankees game at Friendly Fenway Park.  Start time is 7:10pm.  I got a free ticket (to a yankee game!) from work.  This will be my first sox game of the season and it's a Yankee game so I cannot wait!  I could've gone to a previous game but ball games in April are just too darn cold. Unfortunately, it's a business thing so I have to be on good behavior.  I'll be going with my immediate boss, (remember the guy from the lunch?) the owner (the guy who determines my bonus which has a deadline of this May 31st) and some clients.  Ugh.  Like I said I'll be on good behavior.  At least until Jeter's up at bat.  ;)  I figure I cannot wear my beloved "Yankees Suck" T-shirt which I've worn to every Yankee game I've gone to in the past 4-5 years.  It's autographed by Oil Can Boyd, Coco Crisp and Kevin Youklis.  It's just ...

I'm talking about the cash! Guess what time it is? It's time for Very Josie Poker!  I'll be hosting this tournament on the first Wednesday of EVERY MONTH, which is tomorrow! Well, I'm really pissed off right now because I just donked off my chips after playing for 4 1/2 hours.  That's the bad news. The good news is up until that point I played really good poker and came in the money.  8th place = $60 with a free buyin.  So I guess I don't have to make that deposit after all Miami Don! I started off fine, until I got A-K during the first hour.  Flop was A-Q-7.  There was a big raise preflop and a call.  I make a bet after the flop and get a call.  Turn is a king.  I have top 2 pair.  I bet big and the villian (COLUMBO) goes all in. Now there was a big raise preflop so I just don't put columbo on the J-10 for broadway.  I figure him for A-Q or A-J.  I call.  Columbo has pocket queens, which means trips and I double him up. I am down to 665 in chips within the first half hour. Not good. I buckle down and wait to double up. I tell Columbo I'll be coming for him and my chips. I...

When I was playing the live tournament the other day, this critical hand came up.  Did I play this correctly? We were down to 3 players.  Blinds were 5,000 & 10,000.  I was the big blind with the middle stack. BSV = Big Stacked Villian SSV = Small Stacked Villian VJ = Our Hero I'm in the big blind so 10,000 chips of mine are in the pot and I look down at pocket 4s,  BSV is on the button and first to act.  He pushes all in. SSV is the small blind and he pushes all in right behind BSV I was going to call the BSV, but both of them?  Pocket 4's three handed is a pretty good hand, but I'd rather push with it than call with it.  I figure they both have high cards, prolly both have an ace, but what if one of them has a higher pocket pair? You know how I didn't cash in The Mookie (21st place) or that $3 (90) person (12th place) that I played?  Well I kept thinking it'd be so much easier if I could just play a live tourney. So that's what I did.
